A/W'14 Trend Heads Up

It might be August, but A/W is just around the corner. No I don't mean to burst your summer happiness bubble, Vogue is talking winter so we alllllll know it's good enough for anyone to mention now.

Winter has always been one with it's damp, dark weather and this year there's no difference. Think dark tones, greys and blacks with a splash of pristine white. It's the season of layering up on all styles but god won't it feel good? The well cut coats, the big knitwear, the squashy bags that seem to fit EVERYTHING summers dinky-garden-party-clutches just couldn't.

People, it's time for a beautifully styled comfort over hall. And boy, does it look good.

Knitwear. Yeap, that's right big knitwear is in and the slouchy I-don't-give-a-damn look has never looked so stylish. We are talking loose tailoring with soft silhouettes; think a fine charcoal drawing with smudged edges, the sort of purposeful comfort that exudes cool. Helmut Lang highlights this, using sharp business shoes to let people know that it might be knitwear, but there's nothing soft about this trend.

Capes. As much as the fashion world love a well cut woollen coat for A/W, it seems the cape is making its return to our stratosphere. From whimsical fantasy inspiration to sturdy tones, capes are back. Dolce and Gabbana were just one of the few designers to give a forest fantasy reference with their capes, giving an ethereal feel to their collection. Imaginative fantasy isn't far from this years A/W landscape.

But it isn't just covering up that's big this coming season. With winter weather, dressing up gets more elegant, detailed and less-is-more. Dressed to impress has never looked so femme fatale ladylike. Lots of sheer garments with lace overlays and jewelled details, as Nina Ricci displays with this fantastic number.

So there are the trends that popped out to me recently, of course there's more than simply three trends this upcoming season. Keep your eyes peeled for another trend post later on and in the meantime? Brag some knitwear and get ready to dress in sheer.
