PLAYING DRESS UP // NEW YORK FASHION WEEK

London Fashion Week blazed on during fashion month filled with all things colourful, patterned and unapologetically bold. The ambitious displays of bright colours for our Spring/Summer'16 is filled between with clean lines, white everything and dark jackets for the more bespoken dresser. But I'm looking back on some New York shows.

When it comes to fashion, many get tangled up in the mistake of copying outright, forgetting their own tastes and style. I've had asks on tumblr about what clothing to buy and wear, when really it's about firstly what you like. With Fashion Month, it's always fun to dig a bit more into the quirky and unconventional clothing/makeup/hairstyles. It's playing dress up and Jeremy Scott was one of my favourites to demonstrate.

The eye make up was my favourite, reminding me of a minx between Lou Teasdale's #thecraft and the iconic Twiggy. Many of us wear makeup on a day to day basis to cover blemishes, dark circles and uneven skin tone. Scott's show reminded me how FUN make up can be! Make up isn't just for covering up, it can be to show off a bit more of yourself, repping a trend fully or submerging yourself in all things of your style icon. This make up might be a bit outlandish for you on day to day, but we all can do with a graphic eyeliner day or spider lashes. And as a girl who adores a blow-dry, the idea of glamorous big hair and being all 70's style sounds like a dream. Bold doesn't always mean scary or looking like an idiot. It can mean having a lot of fun and playing dress up for the day.

Rodarte gave the idea to wear more than just our plain black tights, and that scarfs were only to be winter fluff. Playing dress up means we're swapping our plain blacks for lace and patterned hosiery. A quote from Syrup says that men catogorise women into four things; sluts, bitches, mothers and virgins. To be taken seriously as a business women we should take small parts of each 'person' and confuse men so they end up having to do one thing; take us seriously. Can lacy tights do that? Not on your nelly, but they look cute and much more fun than those simple thick tights. Even a lower denier can make all the difference.
Rodarte's show gave us flapper mixed with Stevie Nicks vibes, so we might not be playing dress up like in Syrup, but we sure as hell don't look half bad taking some scarf tips from the great Stevie Nicks.

The embellished scarfs from Rodarte tie in with the embellishments covering so many of the Marc Jacobs looks.

Beaded embellishment was up there as one of Jacob's standout components for his collection and here's why. Adding any embellishment, be it beaded or leather, adds a 'punch' to your outfit. It makes a ladylike dress get a bit more delicate or a bit more tough depending what look you're going for; like adding a leather biker jacket to a frilly white sundress. To spice an outfit up, you can head to craft shops and buy some ready made embellishments to sew onto clothing or add patchwork pieces and badges to your plain denim jacket, shirt or jeans for an extra 'you' edge.

Fashion month doesn't mean weeping about not being able to fork out 400 quid for a pair of bedazzled pumps, but taking inspiration of the designers you love and incorporating their designs/styles into your everyday outfit. Embellished shoes, broaches on jackets, graphic liner, using more eyeshadow on a friday because you feel like it. Chucking a skinny scarf on before you head out the door.

Dressing up; you've got to play sometimes.
